Improve Opt-in Conversion Rates by Testing Form Placement

Hey Gang. Today I’d like to share a simple tweak you can make to your opt-in strategy and my reasoning behind why it’s so effective at capturing leads.

We all know the money is in the list, right? Nowadays it’s actually about building a relationship with that list through value-based sponsoring, but that’s a different subject.

Many leaders advocate using an opt-in form on your blog to capture leads, but not many folks cover exactly which location on your page will achieve the best optin rate.

I’ll give you a few ideas to consider; But the truth is, you won’t know which location performs best without testing different placements.

It could be that you have one of these forms set up right now in your sidebar.. If so, have you tested the conversion vs. other locations,or the effectiveness of a popup form vs. your on-page form?

Without metrics you’re essentially making an educated guess. You won’t know for sure what specific location on a given page will produce the greatest opt-in if you don’t performance test it on a few different locations.

Here’s a quick tip…

The bottom of the post is a great place for an opt-in box. Why? If you think about it, it’s really about combining a logical call to action with good user experience. The visitor has finished your article and are not only looking for the next step to take, but they have to be interested in your niche, right? Why not conviently offer them the chance to opt into your newsletter?

You’ll actually see an example of what I’m talking about at the bottom of this post; and if you should choose to take action by entering your information in the form that’s fine by me. ;)

Seriously, another test to run may be having one at the top (in your sidebar) and another at the end of the article with a slightly different message.

You can simply update the HTML of your site to add the code from your autoresponder, or use one of the many plugins to add extra flexibility. If you run a WordPress blog, one essential plugin I encourage you to look into is MaxBlogPress Subscriber Magnet.

This powerful plugin has 3 main types of opt-in box enhancements you can add to your site, including a pop up form, a slide in footer bar form and an end of post form.

Another tip. When you setup split tests, it’s a good idea to add a tracking code to your URL’s so you can effectively monitor your conversions. By checking for referring tracking codes in your autoresponder you can get a good idea of which forms are driving the most opt-ins for your campaign.

You may be in business for yourself, but you’re not in it by yourself.
