This article will explain the basics of modern keyword research, and how to identify keywords that you can get top 10 ranking for in Google. If you run a website and want to get more traffic, one popular way is to have your website rank on the first page of results in a Google query for a given keyword. The problem most businesses face is targeting high competition keywords. A mid-size men’s retail company may deciede they want to rank #1 for the phrase “mens pants” and simply start creating content. No research, no metrics, no evaluation of competition. Just to put it in perspective, No magical force I know will propel your website to the top result for high competition phrases like “women’s skirt”, “real estate” or “weight loss”.
The reason is simple. Competition. A search for these terms yields millions of results, but there’s only 10 spots on the first page of results. Really, you want to be in the top 3, and this will be very difficult in these examples.
But, if instead, you look at “long tail” keywords people are searching for, and research these, you can find opportunities to craft content that slips onto that coveted first page.
So how exactly do you identify long tail keywords that have the right amount of traffic but little competition?
Well, First I use Google’s free keyword research tool to search for terms that have a decent number of searches. I will often identify keywords with about 5k monthly searches in the US.
So for a mens fashion search, i may end up with keyword phrases like “long sleeve mens cartagan sweater” or “slim fitting mens sweater tops”. I then record a series of these in a spreadsheet. You can also target by geography i.e. “mens shirts new york”
With that list of keywords, I’ll use another program to analyze them to identify where there are holes in the top 10 Google results. This process can be done manually or using free tools, but it is time consuming and not always as accurate as using the right tool. The only program I use to analyze my chances of ranking in the top 10 for these long tail keywords is called Market Samurai. I highly recommend you get it if you want to do any SEO for your online marketing. In this case, I’m using it to evaluate a myriad of on and offpage ranking factors, such as the number of backlinks and relevance of the domain.
Using this information, I can quickly deciede if there is an opportunity for MY site to rank on the first page of google for a given keyword. If so, I’ll begin an article writing/seo campaign to get first page ranking. At that point, I know how much traffic I can expect on a monthly basis.

Nice article shaun. We should also have a look at the keyword competition whether it is high low or medium. Low competitive keyword may be ranked easily on google.
