Today I want to share with you a story about how an article I wrote almost 3 years ago still brings in over 100 unique hits everyday. Over 80% of this traffic comes from organic search results from Google alone, and all of it is completely free.
Back when I was managing a web development department, we begin experimenting with iPhone-specific websites and noticed there were many things that you could do on the iPhone from the web, such as have a link dial a phone number, link to the app store, sms and maps applications, format presentations to look like native apps, etc. Without really thinking, I wrote an article called “6 tips to optimize your website for iPhone” and put it up on the web.
It contained some explanation, code snippits and examples of some of these techniques from a technical perspective, and was simply ment to serve as a way for me to express some of what I was discovering was possible. Turns out, a bunch of other folks were thinking the same thing, and looking for documentation on how to accomplish it.
Now building a site and writing a bunch of articles to generate traffic is nothing new, but it worked because it was pure value at a time when no one was writing about iphone-optimized websites.
It’s the ol’ selling hamburgers to a starving crowd formula, and it’s still working to this day. 38,278 unique visits in 1 year, thats an average of 104 different people reading that page every day, all year long. Here’s a screenshot from Google Analytics:
One key is that this article still shows up in the top 5 for a bunch of longtail keywords, and these, along with a few high traffic keywords each contribute a small amount to the total daily visitor count. Bonus points if you can guess what my target keyword phrase was. 
Now another key is consistency. You have to create a series of content about a particular topic, one article alone won’t do much, but a series of well crafted ones and some quality back-linking can do wonders over time. The article I’m discussing is just one of the articles from one of my sites, and people stay on that page for almost 4 minutes! That is power!
